Varanasi school closed today: The outbreak of monsoon in North India has now taken a scary form. The water level of the Ganges river in Varanasi is rising rapidly and the district administration has to take a big decision due to serious apprehension of flood. The District Magistrate of Varanasi has ordered all the schools up to 12th standard of the district to be closed on August 5 and 6. Strict action will be taken against schools which do not obey the order.

Why was decided to close the school?

The water level of the Ganges river has now crossed 72 meters in Varanasi, which is just one and a half meters below the high flood level. If the water level continues to rise at this speed, then the record of the devastating flood in 1978 may break. Sensing the danger, the administration has given priority to the safety of children by closing schools.

Which areas affected the most?

  • The flood water is no longer limited to the ghats.
  • Assi Ghat, where there is usually a crowd of tourists, is now immersed in water.
  • Hotels, shops and houses are all submerged.
  • The Varuna River is also in spate at the Nakkhi Ghat, causing water to the surrounding residential areas.
  • Flood waters have also spread in front ghats, Nagwa, eighty and Lanka areas.

BHU Trauma Center also hit

The most worrying thing is that flood waters have reached BHU Trauma Center. The roads have been filled with water to the knees, which has made the movement of patients, doctors and common citizens extremely difficult. Many vehicles are getting locked in water and people are leaving their homes and going towards safe places.

District administration teams are engaged in relief work in flood affected areas. The water police are transporting people to safe places through boats. The DM has made it clear that the situation is constantly being monitored, but there is an appeal to the public not to be vigilant and do not leave unnecessarily.
