SC transfers Karur stampede probe to CBI, sets aside Madras HC SIT order

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India today ordered the transfer of the investigation into the tragic Karur stampede – which claimed 41 lives during a political rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay – to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The bench also set aside the Madras High Court’s controversial directive for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising only state police officers, citing procedural irregularities and the need for an impartial probe.
