New Delhi: Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will take on the Chinese 11th seed pair of Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi in the semi-final of the BWF World Championships 2025 in Paris on Saturday, August 30. Satwik and Chirag have been in phenomenal form in the tournament so far and will battle the Chinese pair for a spot in the final.
The world no.3 Indian pair defeated their nemesis, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia, in the quarterfinal on Friday to book a semifinal showdown with Chen and Liu. Satwik and Chirag defeated the reigning Olympic bronze medallists 21-15, 21-19 to secure at least a bronze medal, and will look to inch closer to a historic gold medal when they take on Chen and Liu in the semifinal.
Satwik and Chirag have displayed phenomenal form in the tournament so far. They registered a come-from-behind win against sixth seeds Liang and Wang in the Round of 16, before beating Chia and Soh in the quarters. The Malaysian pair had shattered Satwik and Chirag’s dream of securing an Olympic medal at the Paris Games last year.
However, the Indian pair kept their composure and showcased their attacking skills this time around to stage an upset against their nemesis. Satwik and Chirag will start as favourites against the young pair of Chen and Liu, who are below them in the world rankings at present. They are the last Chinese pairing left in the men’s doubles event.
Though Chen and Liu are not as experienced and ranked below, they can prove to be tricky opponents for the Indian pair. Nonetheless, Satwik and Chirag would not want to miss out on the chance of reaching their maiden World Championships final in Paris.
