CHENNAI, India (AP) – Sanju Samson’s explosive century propelled Chennai Super Kings to their inaugural victory in the Indian Premier League, defeating Delhi Capitals by 23 runs on Saturday.
Samson scored an impressive 115 not out off 56 balls, contributing significantly to Chennai’s total of 212-2. In response, Delhi Capitals managed only 189 runs, with Jamie Overton claiming 4 wickets for 18 runs.
Chennai’s Strong Performance
Chennai started their innings slowly, reaching just 62 runs before losing their first wicket. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled, scoring only 15 runs off 18 balls.
However, teenager Ayush Mhatre stepped up, scoring 59 off 36 balls, including three fours and four sixes, forming a crucial partnership with Samson. Mhatre’s retirement allowed Chennai to gain momentum in the latter overs.
Samson reached his half-century off 26 balls and accelerated to his fourth IPL century in just 26 more balls, showcasing his power-hitting ability with three sixes.
Despite a late surge from Shivam Dube, who scored 20 runs off 10 balls, Chennai’s final five overs yielded only 52 runs, setting a challenging target for Delhi.
Delhi’s Struggle Against Overton
In their chase, Delhi Capitals faced immediate pressure from Chennai’s bowlers. Pathum Nissanka managed 41 runs off 24 balls, but Overton’s outstanding bowling dismantled the middle order, taking out Sameer Rizvi and David Miller cheaply.
Captain Axar Patel fell for just 1 run, and although Tristan Stubbs provided some resistance with a score of 60 off 38 balls, he could not salvage the innings as Delhi was bowled out for 189.
Overton’s exceptional figures and Anshul Kamboj’s 3-35 were instrumental in Chennai’s victory, which marked their first win of the season.
Punjab Kings Triumph in Chandigarh
In another match, Punjab Kings successfully chased down a daunting target of 220 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad, winning by six wickets. Captain Shreyas Iyer starred with an unbeaten 69 off 33 balls.
Punjab achieved their second-highest successful chase in IPL history, finishing with 223-4 in 18.5 overs. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a brisk partnership, scoring 93 runs during the powerplay.
Arya’s explosive innings included a rapid half-century off just 16 balls, making it the second-fastest in Punjab’s history, while Singh contributed 51 runs off 24 balls before falling to Shivang Kumar.
Hyderabad’s Initial Success
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a competitive total of 219-6, driven by Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 74 runs off 28 balls, which included five fours and eight sixes. The opening pair of Sharma and Travis Head combined for 105 runs in the powerplay.
Both teams set an IPL record for the most sixes hit during the powerplay, totaling 16 sixes in the match. However, despite their strong start, Hyderabad could not defend their total as Punjab showcased their batting prowess.
