India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has opened up about the uncertainty surrounding his high-profile move from Rajasthan Royals (RR) to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), admitting that he was initially worried about ending up at an “unwanted franchise” before the trade was finalised.
Samson described leaving Rajasthan Royals as one of the biggest risks of his cricketing career.
Speaking about the trade, Samson said he had spent more than a decade with Rajasthan Royals and had built strong emotional bonds with the franchise, teammates and fans. He revealed that deciding to leave the team where he had grown as both a player and captain was far from easy.
Samson explained that his biggest concern was uncertainty over his next destination. He said he feared being traded to a franchise where he might not fit into the team’s plans or playing style. According to the wicketkeeper, joining the right environment was crucial at this stage of his career, making the decision particularly challenging.
The 31-year-old said his concerns disappeared once he learned that Chennai Super Kings would be his new team. Calling CSK one of the most respected franchises in the IPL, Samson said he was excited about the opportunity to play in an environment known for stability, strong leadership and a winning culture.
The trade, completed ahead of the IPL 2026 season, saw Samson join CSK while Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moved to Rajasthan Royals in one of the biggest player exchanges in recent IPL history.
