Sanju Samson equals Virat Kohli’s record with sensational 42-ball 89 in T20 World Cup semifinal vs England

New Delhi: Sanju Samson continued his red-hot form in the high-octane semifinal against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, in the T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday. Samson slammed a stunning 42-ball 89 to notch up his second successive half-century in the tournament after his match-winning 96 in the crucial Super Eight clash against West Indies last week.

Samson equalled former captain Virat Kohli’s record for the highest individual score by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup knockout match with his superb 89-run knock against England. Kohli scored an unbeaten 89 against West Indies in the semifinal of the 2016 T20 World Cup. Samson matched his tally to jointly hold the record.

Samson’s 89 is also the joint-third highest individual score by any batter in the T20 World Cup knockouts, behind Finn Allen (100*) and Tilakratne Dilshan (96*). New Zealand opener Allen smashed an unbeaten ton in the first semifinal of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday to power the Kiwis into the final.
