The San Francisco 49ers have finalized a deal with free agent guard Robert Jones, aiming to bolster their offensive line depth as he recovers from a significant neck injury.
A source with knowledge of the agreement disclosed that the deal was reached on Monday, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity prior to the team’s official announcement.
Jones’s Career Overview
Robert Jones, 27, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2021. Over four seasons, he has started 30 games, culminating in his role as a full-time starter in 2024.
Last offseason, Jones signed a one-year contract worth $3.75 million with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was anticipated to compete for a starting position. However, he did not participate in any games after suffering a broken neck during training camp.
49ers Offensive Line Strategy
The 49ers are actively seeking solutions for the left guard position, having experimented with various players in that role last season. Ben Bartch began the previous season as the starter but saw limited action due to injuries and is now a free agent.
Spencer Burford, who started nine games last season, has recently signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, prompting the 49ers to explore additional options. Connor Colby, a seventh-round draft pick from last season, remains on the roster, and the team has also acquired Brett Toth as a free agent to enhance competition at the position.
