Then Lord Vishnu himself suggested the gods and demons to churn the ocean together and from this process fourteen precious gems including Goddess Lakshmi emerged.
Curse of sage Durvasa:- It is believed that due to the arrogant behavior of Indra, sage Durvasa had cursed the gods to be inferior to ‘Shri’ i.e. Lakshmi.
Loss of power of gods:- Due to this curse, heaven was deprived of opulence, wealth and glory, due to which all the gods became weak.
Requirement of nectar:– To regain the power of the gods, Lord Vishnu told them the solution to churn the ocean, which would generate nectar and the gods would become immortal and powerful.

At the behest of Lord Vishnu, the gods and demons decided to churn the ocean together. Mandarachal mountain situated in Bihar was made a churner (churning stick) and Sheshnag was used as a rope. The main purpose of Samudra Manthan was to obtain nectar, which was essential for the gods. At the same time, the demons were also lured with nectar and due to the greed of nectar, the demons also got ready to churn the ocean.
