Sack Shubman Gill as ODI skipper: Former India player’s advice to BCCI

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has said that current Indian ODI captain Shubman Gill should be removed from the team’s captaincy and BCCI should reappoint Rohit Sharma as the captain. Gill replaced Rohit as the skipper in the 50-over format back in October 2025 but India has lost both the ODI series’ under him since then.

During an interaction with InsideSport, Tiwary said the BCCI should ‘course correct’ and start preparing for the 2027 World Cup and this can be done by removing Gill as the skipper and reappointing Rohit for the 50-over format.

‘Yes, absolutely. That’s what I’m suggesting because there’s still time to course correct. It’s about the World Cup. It’s not just about a bilateral series or a random tournament we are going to play,’ Tiwary said.

Gill falters in ODI captaincy debut

Gill made his captaincy debut in Australia but it did not prove to be fruitful as India suffered a series loss. Subsequently, after missing the home series against South Africa, the Indian team once against lost the ODI series against New Zealand under his captaincy, where his role came under a lot of fire.

Tiwary added that if Rohit had been the captain during the series against New Zealand, things would likely have been different. He further said that Rohit is a lot better than Gill and India will have a better chance of winning the ODI World Cup next year under his captaincy. He further defended Rohit saying that despite him being an expert at what he did, what was the need to remove him.

‘What was the need to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy? I’m pretty sure that if Rohit were leading even today in the ODIs, it would have been a different result (New Zealand series) altogether. Because when he won the Champions Trophy, I think the team was going forward in the right direction,’ he said.
