Sabalenka named WTA’s player of the year for second successive season

New Delhi: Top ranked Aryna Sabalenka has been chosen as WTA’s player of the year for the second straight season after remaining on top throughout the 2025 campaign.

She capped off a dominant year by defending the US Open title, while leading the tour in match wins and titles, reaching nine finals, with runner-up finishes at the Australian Open and French and a last four spot in Wimbledon.

The Belarusian claimed four trophies and registered 63 victories over the season go retain the year-end number one ranking for the second consecutive year, setting a single-season prize money record of $15,008,519, the governing body of women’s tennis said.

She is now 12th on the all-time list for weeks in the World No. 1 spot.

Amanda Anisimova was adjudged the most improved player, after being nominated for player of the year award.

The American won the first WTA 1000 titles of her career in Doha and Beijing and reached five finals, reaching her first Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

She entered the top 10 in women’s rankings in July and qualified for maiden WTA Finals appearance to ending the year in the No.4 spot.

Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend were named doubles team of the year after they won a second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and finishing runner-up at the US Open.

Former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic was conferred with the comeback player of the year award after returning to court following her motherhood in April 2024 and winning the Abu Dhabi Open with a victory over world number five Elena Rybakina.

Canadian Victoria Mboko, 19, received the newcomer of the season award after jumping to a career-high 18th spot in the rankings, capped by her maiden WTA 1000 title at home in Montreal.
