Nottinghamshire’s County Championship title push has suffered a blow after South Africa recalled wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne ahead of their three-Test home series against Australia.
Verreynne, 29, in his third spell with Nottinghamshire, had originally signed to play all the club’s red-ball fixtures this summer. However, his central contract obligations take precedence, ruling him out of the final three matches.
Nottinghamshire sit second, four points behind leaders Somerset and one ahead of third-placed Warwickshire with three rounds remaining. Verreynne’s final appearance will come against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge, after which he will miss crucial games against Hampshire, Sussex and Yorkshire.
“I think the club’s got a really special place to me, so I’ll be watching closely,” Verreynne said in a video posted by the club. “The team’s in a good position… it’s going to be quite an exciting run-in.”
Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell admitted the timing was frustrating but accepted Cricket South Africa’s contractual rights.
