According to a report in Deadline, the film saw a big boost on Sunday, earning $27.1 million, just slightly below its $33.1 million Friday previews, helping it build a solid opening total of $80.6 million. Its performance puts it just behind Oppenheimer when it comes to openings of this scale.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and backed by Amazon MGM Studios, the film is now set to record the second-biggest domestic opening for a non-franchise movie after Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which had earned $82.4 million. It is also expected to become the biggest March opening for any non-franchise film, going past the $71 million record set by Jordan Peele’s Us.
The film’s box office trend is being compared to Oppenheimer, which also had a strong Friday before dipping slightly on Saturday. Project Hail Mary has delivered the biggest opening ever for Amazon MGM Studios and marks a major milestone for its directors. For Ryan Gosling, it stands as his second-largest opening after Barbie, which had debuted with massive numbers.
Project Hail Mary faces tough competition from Dhurandhar: The Revenge
At the same time, the film is facing competition in the US from the Indian release Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh. While the Bollywood film has outperformed Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Project Hail Mary continues to lead overall at the box office. As per reports, Project Hail Mary is expected to earn between $75 million and $85 million in North America over its opening weekend. This puts it in close range of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million), placing it among the top March openings.
