S-400 air defense system: Russia is going to give more S-400 units to India. Negotiations are going on between India and Russia to accelerate the delivery of this surface -to -air missile system. The S-400 played a game-changer role during Operation Sindoor from 7 to 10 May 2025. Due to this, Pakistani Air Force could not infiltrate India’s airspace.

According to the NDTV report, India will get a S-400 unit by 2026. A second unit can be found by 2027. India signed a deal with Russia for 5 units of S-400 in 2018. Three units of S-400 were found, two are left. Its supply has been disrupted due to the commencement of Ukraine war. The delay in getting the S-400 unit arose in a meeting between India’s PM Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in China.

S-400 plans to buy more units

Under the Sudarshan Chakra project, India is planning to buy more S-400 systems from Russia. Sudarshan Chakra is several layer air defense framework. PM Modi mentioned this in a speech on Independence Day.

“India already has a S-400 system. Our cooperation is likely to expand in the region,” told TASS, head of Russia’s federal military-technical cooperation service.

What is S-400?

S-400 is air defense system. It fails airstrikes with the help of surface -to -air missiles. Its missiles can destroy air targets such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, fighter aircraft, military aircraft and helicopters. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh has termed it as a “game-changer”. The Pakistan system did not distinguish during Operation Sindoor.

Why is S-400 special?

  • The range of S-400 radar is 600km. It keeps an eye on the enemy’s aerial act.
  • The S-400 can track more than 100 targets simultaneously.
  • Its missile range is 400 km.
  • Every regiment or unit of S-400 has 8 launch vehicles. 4 missiles are ready to be fired in each launch vehicle.

The deal was done for 5 units of S-400 for Rs 39,000 crore

In 2018, India signed a deal with Russia for 5 units of S-400 for Rs 39,000 crore. It was taken in view of the threat arising from Pakistan and China. India got three units of S-400 between 2021 and 2023. They have been deployed in Adampur (Punjab), Eastern Region and Western Region.
