Rudy Sautron’s electrifying 7-under 63 final round propelled the Tennessee Volunteers to a stunning home victory at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate, marking back-to-back titles at Fox Den Country Club.
The Nebraska transfer’s standout performance ignited a dramatic comeback as Tennessee overturned a six-shot deficit to outpace Memphis by four strokes in the season-opening showdown.
Sautron’s brilliance was pivotal for the Volunteers, who produced a blistering 14-under team score in the final round-eight strokes better than any other competitor on Tuesday. His superb effort secured second place individually, just one shot behind medalist Evan Rogers of Chattanooga, who finished at 10 under par. Alongside Sautron, Jackson Herrington, the 2025 U.S. Amateur runner-up, delivered crucial support, finishing tied for seventh and helping Tennessee surge six positions up the leaderboard.
With Tennessee’s top player, world No. 3 amateur Tyler Watts, competing in the Walker Cup in Ireland, the pressure fell squarely on Sautron and Herrington to lead the host team to victory. Freshman Pennson Badgett and Christian Pardue also contributed under-par rounds of 68 and 69, respectively, rounding out a formidable team effort that set the tone for the 2026-27 collegiate golf season.
The tournament also featured notable debuts from amateur standouts. Mason Howell, the 2025 U.S. Amateur champion, made his collegiate debut for Georgia, finishing tied for 23rd. Meanwhile, Noah Maclauchlan, the reigning 2026 U.S. Junior champion representing Liberty, placed tied for 36th in his first collegiate event. North Carolina sophomore and second-team preseason All-American Carson Bertagnole secured third place at eight under, reinforcing his status as a player to watch this season.
The Visit Knoxville Collegiate’s thrilling conclusion showcased the immediate impact of high-profile transfers like Sautron and underscored Tennessee’s depth despite the absence of their star Watts. The Volunteers’ ability to rally with a dominant final round not only secured the title but sent a strong message about their championship ambitions moving forward.
