A 60-year-old man was apprehended for raising slogans against BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely during a public event in Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar.
This was Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s first public appearance since the attack on her a couple of days ago.
The man, identified as Praveen Sharma, runs a cable TV business in Ajeet Nagar. He claimed to be a BJP worker for the last 40 years, the police said.
“Praveen Sharma, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, raised slogans against Gandhi Nagar MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely while he was addressing the people,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said.
Sharma was standing in a street behind security barricades and was escorted away from the venue. “Security of the VIP was not breached at any point in time,” the DCP said.
To be sure, the ruckus had ended before Gupta arrived, the police officer said.
“I assure you that your CM Didi will not be afraid, will not get tired, will not lose,” Gupta said while addressing an event organised by the Association of Wholesale Readymade Garment Dealers in Gandhi Nagar Market, Shahdra, on Friday. “Till Delhi gets its rights, she will keep fighting with you. It is my vow to continuously fight with you.”
At the event, Gupta also announced local MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely as the chairman of the Yamuna Paar Vikas Board.
“He has been in top posts in the Delhi government, but just for the sake of development, without any hidden agendas, joined the BJP. He is like the chief minister of Gandhi Nagar,” Gupta said. “He took an oath for Delhi’s development. Lovely will be the chairman of the Yamuna Paar Vikas Board.”
The chief minister also asked Lovely and East Delhi MP and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra to prepare a proposal for the budget for the development of the area. “I am sanctioning the budget today. You just make a file with the budget estimates,” she said.
The Delhi government will now start mapping routes for all DTC buses and will begin from Trans Yamuna. “We will fix the routes. Every area will get adequate buses,” she said.
On Wednesday (20 August 2025), Gupta was attacked by Rajeshbhai Khimji, a 41-year-old man from Rajkot, during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ session at her camp office. The accused was arrested, and a case under various charges-including attempt to murder-was registered against him. Gupta stayed put at her official residence in Civil Lines since then.
The chief minister is scheduled to attend the grand finale of ‘Ideathon’, an event organised by the state industries department, at the Ashok Hotel in Chanakyapuri at 4:00 pm today.
The chief minister is likely to return to her office at the Delhi Secretariat today, PTI reported.
