Rs 8 Lakh German SUV Coming In 2027 – Turbo Engine, 8-Speed AT

Earlier this year, Volkswagen confirmed its plan to focus on multiple segments and powertrain options while introducing new models and facelifts under its India 2.0 product strategy. Meanwhile, the German automaker is gearing up to launch the Virtus facelift in December and an all-new sub-4 metre SUV early next year.

Expected Price & Competition

Interestingly, the upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV will mark the brand’s entry into the sub-4 metre segment following the discontinuation of the Polo in 20222. It will become Volkswagen’s most affordable SUV in India and compete against the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO. The SUV is estimated to be priced around Rs 8 lakh for the base variant with the top trim likely to cost nearly Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom).

Engine & Gearbox Options

The new Volkswagen SUV is expected to share its underpinnings and powertrain with the Skoda Kylaq, while featuring a distinct styling and a few additional features. Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the SUV could be offered with a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine, generating 115bhp and 178Nm. There are no reports of diesel or CNG options so far.

While the Skoda Kylaq is available with 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options, the new Volkswagen SUV is expected to be offered with an 8-speed automatic transmission from launch. A 6-speed manual transmission will come as standard.

Design Highlights

The Brazil-spec Volkswagen Tera provides a possible preview of the upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV in India. However, the India-spec model is likely to receive market-specific changes such as a differently designed grille, slim LED headlamps with connected LED DRLs, sporty bumper. Other key highlights might include dual-tone alloy wheels, body cladding, roof rails, connected LED taillamps.

While the Brazil-spec VW Tera measures 4,151mm in length, the India-bound model will be less than 4,000mm long to quality as a sub-4 metre SUV. Similar to the Kylaq, it could feature a 2,566mm long wheelbase.

Expected Features

In terms of features, the upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV could offer a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone connectivity, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, connected car technology, ambient lighting, a single-pane electric sunroof, six airbags, electronic stability control, rear parking sensors and more.
