Rs 24000000000: Lalit Modi makes explosive claims on IPL, says BCCI, franchises losing massive money every season due to this change, know details

Lalit Modi has highlighted concerns over the current scheduling of the Indian Premier League (IPL), he claimed that the franchises are losing out approximately Rs 2,400 crore every season because of the changes in home and away format.

Less matches in IPL not working in favour of team

Even though there have been addition of two new teams, the league still remains limited to 74 matches where every team is supposed to face each other twice but this means that the total fixtures will go up to 94.

How much share does BCCI get?

“(For) every game, the BCCI gets 50 per cent, and the remaining 50 per cent is distributed to teams. So, teams are now losing out on 20 games. It is by contractual obligation for the fees that they’re paying to provide them home and away,” Modi told Sportstar.

“The home and away is where the value is. If you don’t have time in your calendar, don’t increase the number of teams. Simple as that. That’s not what we sold. Has everybody signed off on it? I guarantee not,” he added.

Approximately Rs 120 crore loss every year for each team

Modi also pointed out that the reduction in matches is not letting the franchises maximise their revenues. According to him each team is forfeiting nearly Rs 120 crore in revenue annually despite the format being modified.

Rs 2400 crores – Total revenue lost

“If there were 94 matches today on a home and away basis – Rs 118 crore a game – it’s Rs 2,400 crore, just the media rights. That’s Rs 2,400 crores extra that’s coming to the BCCI,” he claimed. “Out of this, Rs 1,200 crores would have gone to the 10 teams, each team would have got 120 crores, and the team value should have automatically been higher.”
