NCERT has made major changes in the Class 7 mathematics book ‘Ganita Prakash’. Now students will be able to learn about the contributions of Indian mathematicians like Brahmagupta, the Indian roots of algebra and geometry. Know the details.
NCERT Class 7 Textbook Update: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made a major change in the new mathematics book of class 7. In Part 2 of ‘Ganita Prakash’, students will now get to read not only questions and answers but also about the historical achievements of Indian mathematicians. In the new book, the contribution of ancient mathematicians of India in subjects like Algebra, Integers and Geometry has been explained.
What is special in Ganita Prakash new book
The new edition of Ganita Prakash contains examples taken from Sanskrit texts, ancient mathematical problems and their solutions. An attempt has been made in the book to show the glorious history of Indian mathematics, so that students can know how deep the roots of subjects like algebra and arithmetic are in India.
New chapter on Brahmagupta and algebra
The famous 7th century Indian mathematician Brahmagupta has been mentioned in the chapter on integers in the book. It is told that in his work ‘Brahmasphutasiddhanta’, the rules of multiplication and division of positive and negative numbers were written for the first time. According to NCERT, this was an important step in the history of mathematics which determined the direction of the development of arithmetic and algebra.
Algebra was called ‘Bijaganita’
In the chapter on Algebraic Equations, it has been told that in ancient India it was called ‘Bijaganita’. At that time mathematicians used to create equations and solve them through symbols. That is, the foundation of the algebra problems we solve today was laid centuries ago in India.
There was mention of Indian mathematics in the first part also
The first part of Ganita Prakash also contained references to Indian mathematicians in some chapters, but this time it has been covered in more detail.

According to NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani, the purpose of these changes is to teach the correct history to the students, so that they get a chance to understand India’s contribution in the right context and not from the colonial perspective.
Changes under the new education policy
There was no mention of ancient Indian mathematicians in the old class 7 book. But now NCERT has made this change in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), so that Indian tradition and knowledge can get its right place in the education system.
