Rohit Sharma’s ODI and MI Captaincy Exit Came Too Early, Claims former India player Wasim Jaffer

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has triggered a fresh debate regarding the leadership changes in Indian cricket. Jaffer recently stated that veteran batter Rohit Sharma should have continued as the captain of both the national ODI side and the Mumbai Indians (MI).

Despite persistent chatter surrounding his fitness and future in the sport, Rohit has continued to score runs consistently. However, the management opted for a firm leadership transition across formats over the past year.

A Leadership Transition

The Indian cricket setup saw a major shift last year when Shubman Gill replaced Rohit as the ODI captain during the white-ball tour of Australia. Similarly, at the franchise level, Hardik Pandya took over the leadership reins at Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 IPL season.

Jaffer strongly disagreed with the timing of these decisions. He argued that the national team management should have persisted with Rohit until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Rohit should’ve been retained as ODI captain. He should have also remained the captain of MI,” Jaffer stated. He further suggested that the management could have seamlessly passed the baton to Gill after the upcoming 50-over showpiece event.

Jaffer’s comments come right on the heels of Rohit’s explosive run of form against the West Indies. During the recent ODIs against the Caribbean side, Rohit reminded the selectors of his immense value at the top of the order.

He finished as India’s second-highest run-scorer in the series, amassing 225 runs in three innings at an average of 75.00. Batting with a strike rate exceeding 115, Rohit registered a half-century and a commanding top score of 101.

While the transition to younger captains like Gill and Pandya is already in full motion, Rohit’s current form on the pitch continues to keep the conversation. The veteran has looked in ominous touch in the last few matches, and if he continues the run, the former India captain will be a certain for the flight to South Africa.
