Rohit Sharma to remain as India ODI Captain? ICC poster for IND vs ENG series creates Spark

An ICC poster featuring Rohit Sharma as the face of India’s 50-over cricket team has created a spark among the fans.

Rohit Sharma is indeed India’s captain in the 50-over format, having recently led India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title.

But there have been speculations about him remaining India captain in the upcoming months.

Despite speculations about his retirement from ODIs following this victory, Rohit himself has publicly denied plans to retire from the format, asserting he intends to continue playing and leading India in ODIs for the near future. However, there is some uncertainty within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about Rohit’s long-term future as ODI captain, especially given his age and the arrival of younger leadership prospects like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.

Contextually, Rohit no longer captains India in Tests or T20Is; these roles have passed on, with Shubman Gill taking charge in Tests and Suryakumar Yadav assumed deputy duties in shorter formats. Rohit’s decision to step down from T20Is after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and step back from Test captaincy marked a transitional phase. But amid the concerns of Rohit’s future as India captain, the ICC poster has been a big indicator, as per the fans.

The ICC poster featuring Rohit and Harry Brook for the India tour of England for the limited overs series in 2026 can be a big sign that Rohit will remain captain in the ODI format, at least till the 2027 ICC World Cup. India will tour England in a 5-match T20I and 3-match ODI series in July next year, after playing a five-match Test series this year, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Apart from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli is also expected to remain a part of India’s 50-over squad. The duo have been the flagbearers of Indian cricket in the past decade or so, and are expected to bid adieu to international cricket on their own terms.
