Rohit Sharma set to lead India in T20 World Cup 2024 after being named captain for South Africa T20I tour – Report

New Delhi: All the speculations over Rohit Sharma’s future in T20I cricket were put to bed by the BCCI as the star batter was named skipper of India’s T20I team for the upcoming South Africa tour, according to a report in Indian Express . The move to name Rohit the captain in the 20-over format besides the Test team is a clear indication that the Indian cricket board wants him to lead the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup 2024. Meanwhile, KL Rahul will lead the ODI side in the absence of Rohit, who will skip the ODI leg and return to lead the side when the Test series begins on December 26. Rahul has also been named Rohit’s deputy in the T20I series.

Meanwhile, superstar batter Virat Kohli was not included in both ODI and T20I squads. He will, however, feature in the Test series.

The BCCI top brass successfully convinced Rohit to lead the side in the T20 format despite his reluctance after the 2022 World T20 semi-final exit as the board announced the three squads for the South Africa tour in Delhi on Thursday.

India will start their tour with a three-match T20I series starting from December 10 followed by as many ODI games between December 17-21. Post the white-ball fixtures, the Men in Blue are slated to play two Test matches.

BCCI secretary and convenor of the selection committee Jay Shah met the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in Delhi to discuss the squads as well as prepare a roadmap for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
