New Delhi: India’s ODI skipper Rohit Sharma passed the fitness test ahead of the three-match series against Australia. The T20I vice-captain, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah also cleared the fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Sunday, reports PTI.
Rohit does not have any immediate assignments after he announced his retirement from the Test and T20I formats. The senior batter will next travel to Australia for an ODI series in November.
While, Gill will travel to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which is set to begin on September 9. His teammates Jasprit Bumrah and Jitesh Sharma also cleared the fitness parameters. The 25-year-old was appointed India’s vice-captain for the T20 tournament after a stellar show in the five-match Test series against England.
Earlier, Gill was named as the skipper of the North Zone for the Duleep Trophy, but he pulled out because of a fever and took a rest at his home in Chandigarh. The other Indian players who passed without any issue are Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur.
Apart from the Yo-Yo test, a DXA Scan, which is a simplified method to test bone density, was also done during the fitness test at the BCCI’s CoE. Jaiswal and Washington are named in the standby list for the Asia Cup, while Thakur will lead the West Zone in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone from September 4.
Rohit likely to play in ODI series against Australia A
Before joining the senior team, Rohit might feature in the three-match ODI series between India A and Australia A, which is set to begin in Kanpur on September 30. The confirmation for that is yet to come, but India’s ODI skipper is likely to stay in Bengaluru for a few more days to train at the CoE.
Other Asia Cup squad members, like Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav and Riyan Parag (standby), have featured in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinals for their respective Zonal teams, and there will be no fitness test for them now. Wicketkeeper batter Dhruv Jurel, ruled out of the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal because of a groin niggle.
