Rohit Sharma has retained his place in India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against West Indies, bringing an end, for now, to weeks of speculation surrounding his immediate future in the format.
The former captain’s position had become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the selection meeting as India continued to weigh their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Shubman Gill will continue to captain the side, while KL Rahul has been named his deputy and remains the leading wicketkeeping option. Virat Kohli also keeps his place in the batting core, ensuring India retain considerable experience despite several changes elsewhere in the squad.
Rohit’s inclusion carries particular significance after sustained discussion over whether the selectors were preparing to move beyond the 39-year-old. His 138 against England at Lord’s in his previous ODI had strengthened his case considerably, while the BCCI had also publicly pushed back against suggestions that his place was under immediate threat.
Dhruv Jurel has been picked as the second wicketkeeping option behind Rahul, while Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal have also been included in the batting group. Naman Dhir is another notable inclusion, with the selectors handing him an opportunity in a squad missing several regular white-ball names.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, Auqib Nabi included
Nitish Kumar Reddy has been included as India’s seam-bowling all-round option, while Ravindra Jadeja retains his place and adds experience to the spin department. The absence of Hardik Pandya means Nitish could have an important role in balancing the side, particularly if India want an additional pace option without compromising batting depth.
Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are among the players unavailable because of their Asian Games commitments. Their absence has opened the door for players such as Naman, Gurnoor Brar and Auqib Nabi to break into the ODI squad.
Kuldeep Yadav will lead the specialist spin department alongside Jadeja, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna provide experience in the pace attack. Gurnoor and Auqib complete the fast-bowling group, giving India a mix of established internationals and newer options.
The series will inevitably place further focus on Rohit, who now plays international cricket only in the ODI format and has not publicly committed himself to the 2027 World Cup. His retention for the West Indies series, however, ensures he remains firmly part of India’s immediate 50-over plans.
