New Delhi: Roblox has officially rolled out a new Makeup category in its Avatar Marketplace and Customise tab, introducing a fresh layer of personalisation for millions of users worldwide. The feature is introduced with more than 100 items and gives a player an opportunity to blend and combine features like eyes, lips, eyebrows, eyelashes and full-face appearances. The company claims that this update will allow users more control over their presentation in virtual spaces.
The release indicates the extent to which identity is becoming a part of avatars on Roblox. The platform showed that users changed their avatars 274 million times daily on average in the first half of 2025, which has pointed to the increased value of customisation. Makeup accessories are not limited to conventional cosmetics, such as face paint, battle marks, camouflage, and creative designs applicable to various gaming experiences.
A new layer of avatar customisation
Roblox claims that the Makeup category is modular, which means that the user can mix several different elements in the same way as beauty routines in the real world. Gamers are allowed to test out eyeshadow, lipstick, blush, and others or choose more exaggerated options such as fantasy face paint or theme makeup.
It is also compatible with full-face combinations that have been developed by developers, and this allows users to apply full-face styles at a time. Roblox states that the feature will be compatible with all types of avatars and will make sure that they work regardless of the shape or design of the avatar.
Big opportunity for creators and brands
The monetisation opens up the new opportunities of monetising to creators. The developers are now able to create and sell makeup products, such as temporary collections and seasonal looks. A study of Roblox by Ipsos indicates high demand: 87 per cent of the Gen Z respondents surveyed indicated that they would be willing to spend on avatar makeup at least once a month, and 85 per cent said that customisation made their gaming more exciting.
The title sponsor of the launch is beauty brand e. l.f. Cosmetics. The firm has collaborated with creators to launch virtual appearances that are based on its physical products. The virtual world has become so intertwined with real life that Roblox Makeup is our love letter to a community that does not subscribe to culture but builds it; a virtual world that creates it, which is why Patrick O’Keefe explains, Chief Integrated Marketing Officer of e.l. f. Beauty.
Technology behind the feature
Roblox clarified that the system uses the already available avatar facial mapping data to make sure makeup fits on various faces correctly. Layered customisation is also a feature that enables people to stack several items and modify their arrangement to create different styles.
Creators may apply physically based rendering (PBR) to create realistic effects like glossy lipstick, metallic eyeshadow, and highlighter and bring the visual quality to a level of real-world quality.
Why makeup matters in virtual worlds
The company focused on the fact that makeup is not only about aesthetics; it contributes to identity and community. The data provided by Roblox indicates that 82 per cent of Gen Z users believe that makeup is critical in self-expression, and 77 per cent feel more like themselves when they put it on. It also aids users to meet, with most of them claiming that it is more convenient to find like-minded communities.
Through this release, Roblox is making makeup an essential aspect of avatar identity. According to the company, developers and players should find new creative opportunities with this new feature: themed games or subtle gameplay elements such as team identification or camouflage.
