In a fresh twist to the 38-day US government shutdown, Republicans rejected Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer’s proposal to end the funding deadlock. Schumer had offered to reauthorise government funding in exchange for a one-year extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which help lower healthcare costs for millions of Americans.
Nope. This is laughable.
Democrats want to give $35 billion next year to insurance companies for subsidies with no fraud controls and to benefit the wealthy.
Hard no, Chuck. https://t.co/q9uwTEaZr5

“Democrats are ready to clear the way to quickly pass a government funding bill that includes healthcare affordability,” Schumer said, urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune to accept the deal. The offer, however, was swiftly dismissed by Republicans, who insisted the government must reopen before discussing healthcare provisions. “Release the hostage. End the pain,” Thune’s spokesperson Ryan Wrasse said.
