New Delhi: After the last generation, Dodge enthusiasts have been asking for a V8 version of the Charger. Now, next year, this could actually be happening. As per sources of Moparinsiders, there is a Charger Hellcat in development already, and while still in its early stages, the high-horsepower Charger could be arriving in the 2028 model year.
It does mean a potential on-sale timing sometime in the second half of 2027.
Current CEO of Ram and head of the reformed SRT Division, Tim Kuniskis, had previously said that if the present Charger comes with a V8, it won’t be a 5.7-litre Hemi. The 6.4-litre V8 makes less power than the 550 bhp twin-turbocharged Hurricane inline-six, so that engine doesn’t seem practical either.
Charger has to go full Hellcat, and that sounds like that’s the exact plan Dodge has implied. Charger fans will give anything and everything for that. Even though the current Sixpack model is quite a performer, fans are devotees of that noise and fury from the V8 model.
If Dodge can retain the adjustable RWD/AWD powertrain for the Hellcat version, that would be the bargain of the century. Then the carmaker would have an absolute four-seasons muscle machine on their hands. The V8 engine is a sensible option for Dodge as their fanbase prefers that over EVs and six-cylinder powertrains. This is true even when the electric and smaller ICE options are delivering more power and are more efficient. A Hellcat will take care of all the fans of the fanbase the company has. One does wonder if the arrival of a Charger Hellcat is as close as being said.
