Relief news for Vi! Government gives some more time, AGR dues will be settled by June

Vodafone Idea has got a big relief, which has been given by the government. According to sources, the telecom department hopes that the AGR reassessment work of Vodafone Idea — which recently got relief from the government for its dues and liabilities — will be completed by June. Earlier the target was set to complete this reassessment by March 31. Sources said that after the reassessment of the internal license fee by the Controller of Communication Accounts, the Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) is under review. According to sources, due to this the deadline has been extended to June.

How much is AGR outstanding?

The Union Cabinet has provided relief to Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) based on the Supreme Court order and ‘frozen’ its Adjusted Gross Revenue or AGR dues at Rs 87,695 crore for the period from FY 2006-07 to FY 2018-19. This ‘frozen’ dues are subject to reassessment. This amount does not include the AGR dues for FY 2017-18 and FY 2018-19, which have been finalized by the apex court’s 2020 order and are to be paid accordingly.

Communication Minister’s answer in Lok Sabha

In response to a question asked in the Lok Sabha earlier in February this year, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar had said that the AGR dues of VIL that were ‘frozen’ till December 31, 2025, will also be re-assessed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in line with the deduction verification guidelines. A committee constituted by DoT on January 30, 2026, will take a decision on the outcome of this re-assessment conducted by the Department of Telecom.

He had said in his reply that this committee will include a retired Secretary-level officer of the Government of India and a representative of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), who will be nominated by the CAG. The Committee will finalize the results of the re-assessment within a period of two months (unless extended). He further said that the decision of the committee will be final and binding on both the parties, i.e. DoT and VIL.
