Chandigarh: A strange incident has happened in Chandigarh, Punjab. A 17 year old girl was thrown into a canal at midnight with her hands tied by her father, suspecting her character. He had also recorded a video of this incident. After this video went viral, the police arrested the father and registered a case of murder against him and sent him to jail. But, after two months the girl has returned alive and is pleading for the release of her father from jail. This incident happened in Firozpur district of Chandigarh. This girl, who has left school, is the eldest among the four daughters of the family. Appearing before the media on Sunday, she told how despite her hands being tied, she survived even after being thrown into the canal. He has appealed to release his father from jail.
What happened that day?
On the night of 29 September, father Surjit Singh got angry at his daughter, doubting her character. He then tied her hands with a rope and brutally pushed her into the canal. He himself recorded this horrific act on his mobile phone. This incident happened in front of the mother and her three younger sisters. Surjeet Singh, who made a video of his own act, went to jail as soon as the video went viral on social media.
In the video he can be heard saying, “Go, die.” As his wife screamed for help, he said, “Let her die.” He also said ‘bye-bye’ when his daughter was swept away in the water. But, a cousin of the girl immediately lodged a police complaint. Firozpur city police arrested Surjeet Singh and registered a case of murder. Since then Surjeet Singh is in judicial custody in Central Jail in the murder case.
Two months have passed since all this happened. Now the girl who came forward told the media how she escaped from the jaws of death. The strong current of the canal loosened the rope tied in his hands. While drowning helplessly in the water, his head hit an iron rod protruding above the water. The drowning man got support from a straw and the same iron rod became a means of saving his life. She caught hold of it and came up from the water, but could not get out of the canal.
Then three unknown passersby passing by saw him and took him to a safe place. Two months later, she has come out to the media saying that she is alive. However, she did not reveal who sheltered her for two months and where she was. But he has said that he is ill and is undergoing treatment.
Furthermore, she appealed for her father to be released from jail, saying, “My sisters need him. There is no one to take care of my younger sisters, release them from jail.” The 17-year-old girl alleged that her mother had instigated her father who was angry and drunk during the attack. The girl also said that she does not trust her relatives and has now also sought police protection.
The police is now investigating this matter. With the girl’s return, the murder charge against her father can be changed to attempt to murder. Bhupinder Singh, a senior police officer, said, “It is very good news that she has been found safe.” The girl said that she was initially scared and shocked, and because of the head injury she did not remember some things, that was why she did not come forward earlier.
Police officer Bhupinder Singh said, “The video of the incident was made by the girl’s father. Based on that video, a case was registered against him under section 302 (murder). But, now that the girl has been found alive, appropriate sections will be imposed on the basis of her statements and further action will be taken accordingly.”
