Mumbai Indians have confirmed the appointment of Luke Williams as their head coach for the 2027 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after a disappointing campaign in 2026 when they failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in history.
He will take charge from Lisa Keightley, whose tenure in the top job lasted just one season.
Lisa had taken over the job from Charlotte Edwards, who was in charge for the first three seasons of the cash-rich league before taking over as the England women’s cricket team head coach. In Charlotte’s tenure, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI won the WPL twice (2023 and 2025) while finishing third in 2024.
Who Is Luke Williams?
Luke Williams was the head coach of the RCB in the 2024 and 2025 seasons of the WPL. It was under his tenure that the Smriti Mandhana-led side lifted the title in 2024, which was the first-ever trophy won by the RCB franchise in any gender or tournament. He was also head coach of the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, he was the assistant coach of the Southern Brave when they won the Women’s Hundred in 2023.
Interestingly, he is currently the assistant coach of the England Women’s cricket team under MI’s two-time WPL-winning coach Edwards.
