2000 rupee note
The Reserve Bank of India has issued a big update regarding the 2000 rupee note. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said on Thursday that the 2000 notes will not be in circulation for long. But their legal tender will remain. That is, notes will not be illegal. They can be deposited by going to RBI office.
According to the ANI report, in the meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, the RBI Governor has given updates about the note. In the meeting, many MPs were questioned about the trend of 2000 notes, in response to which Sanjay Malhotra said that the notes will not be seen in the market for long. However, his legal tender will remain intact.
There are so many notes in the market
The announcement was made by RBI a year ago, it is withdrawing the 2000 rupee note. However, despite this, according to the PTI report, notes worth Rs 6,099 crore are present in the market as of 1 July. Regulatory Bank announced the return of notes on 19 May 2023. Since then, information about the notes returned from time to time is also being given to the bank.
When did notes start
After excluding 500 and 1000 rupee notes from RBI, a new 2000 note was issued in 2016. The general public can return 2000 rupee notes from any post office of the country to any RBI issue office and submit equal amount to its bank account. RBI said that by December 2024, about 98.08% notes have been returned. The total value of these notes has come down from Rs 3.56 lakh crore on 19 May 2023 to Rs 6,839 crore by 29 November 2024.

When the Reserve Bank of India announced to withdraw the 2000 rupee note, then the general public was then given the extension of depositing or replacing 2000 rupee notes in any bank branch by 7 October 2023. After that, from 9 October 2023, this facility has been limited to 19 nominated RBI issue offices across India. Now the Customers RBI office Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram can be deposited in notes.
