Ravindra Jadeja Breaks 57-Year-Old World Record; Becomes First Player In History To Achieve Huge Feat

Ravindra Jadeja cemented his status as the world’s best all-rounder in Test cricket during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (ATT) with an incredible display for India as he played a key role in helping the Shubman Gill-led team seal a historic 2-2 draw against England.

Jadeja continued his golden run with the bat with 516 runs at an average of 86 with one century and five half-centuries to his name in 10 innings. This is the second-highest tally by a visiting player in a Test series in England while batting at number six or below.

Jadeja’s tally of six fifty-plus scores is the highest by a player from an away team in a series in England.

Ravindra Jadeja Breaks 57-Year-Old World Record

While Jadeja scored two half-centuries in the first innings (Edgbaston and Lord’s), it was batting in India’s second innings that stood out. The 36-year-old made 315 runs in five outings while batting in the third or fourth innings of the match during the 2025 ATT, which included one century and three half-centuries.

Infact, Jadeja was not dismissed in the second innings in the first four matches, and his dismissal during the fifth Test at Oval was the first instance of him failing to stay unbeaten. This meant that the star cricketer finished the series with an astonishing average of 315.

Jadeja’s batting average is the highest in history during a five-match Test series in the second innings, and he is the first player to finish a series while averaging above 300, having played at least five matches. Jadeja broke Gary Sobers’ record, which stood for 57 years.

Overall, only Sunil Gavaskar (468) has averaged higher in a Test series than Jadeja in the second innings, when he made 468 runs in four matches at an average against the West Indies in 1971 with two centuries and half-centuries each. This was the same series in which he put up the record tally of 774 runs in what was remarkably his maiden assignment for the national team. While this was also a five-match series, Gavaskar did not play the first match before making his Test debut in the second match.

Andy Flower (302) is the only other player to end a Test series with an average above 300 when he made 302 runs in two matches against India in 2000.

Jadeja’s tally of 315 runs is also the third-highest by a player from number six or below in a series in the second innings and the best in the last 44 years.

The tally of four 50+ scores by Jadeja is also the joint-most in the second innings of a series.
