Ravana was very powerful and extremely knowledgeable. There was chaos in all three worlds due to his bravery. According to Ramcharitmanas, Ravana had pleased Lord Brahma by doing severe penance and had asked him for the boon of immortality. Therefore the end of Ravana was almost impossible. Not only this, along with Ravana, his brothers Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana also received special blessings from Lord Brahma.
In Ramcharitmanas, Goswami Tulsidas has written in a couplet-
What kind of penance do I have, brother? Don’t be so furious, go to sleep.
Seeing the penance near Gayu, Bidhaata. I am pleased with you, my father.
Meaning- The three brothers performed many types of very difficult penances, which cannot be described. Lord Brahma was pleased with their penance and said – I am extremely pleased with the penance of all three of you. Ask for whatever boon you want. Then Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana expressed their wishes and asked for boons.
Tulsidas further writes-
Kari bengiti paad gahhi dassisa. Listen to the words spoken by Jagadisa.
We should not kill for no reason. Monkey Manuj caste is about two.
And why did you do so much penance? I met Brahma and said that.
Puni Prabhu wore Kumbhakaran. That’s why my mind is afraid without any reason.
Meaning- Ravana held the feet of Lord Brahma and asked for the boon of immortality. Ravana said, O Jagdishwar! I should not end up in this world at the hands of anyone except monkeys and humans. Pleased with the penance done by Ravana, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma gave him a similar boon.
This is the reason that Lord Rama’s army was full of monkeys and Lord Rama himself incarnated as the seventh incarnation of Vishnu, who became the reason for Ravana’s destruction.
After this Brahma ji went to Kumbhakaran. But seeing him Brahma ji was very surprised. Tulsidas has written about this subject in Ramcharitmanas-
Jaun ehin khal nit karab aharu. These are all the tools of the world.
Sarad Praeri Tasu Mati Pheri. Magesi slept for six months.
Meaning- Seeing Kumbhakaran, Lord Brahma thought that if this evil person eats food daily, he will destroy the whole world. Thinking this, Lord Brahma inspired Saraswati and changed her mind. As a result, Kumbhakarna asked Lord Brahma to sleep for six months. There are also legends regarding this that Kumbhakaran had asked Brahma ji for Nidrasana instead of Indrasana.
Went to Bibhishan and said, ‘Putra baar magu’.
That’s why I ask for God’s words, lotus action, devotion.
Meaning- After this Brahma ji went to Vibhishana and said – O son! I was pleased with your penance. Ask for whatever boon you want. On this, Vibhishana asked Lord Brahma for pure love at the lotus feet of God. There were no feelings of selfishness, ego and deceit in Vibhishana. His life was dedicated to devotion and true faith in God.
