Actress Rani Mukerji was recently honored with a citation for outstanding acting at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to portray strong women who laugh openly, love deeply, fight fearlessly, and never lose faith in themselves.
Throughout her career, Rani has taken on diverse roles, becoming a key figure in contemporary Hindi cinema with some of the most memorable female characters. Her performances in films like “Black,” “Hum Tum,” “Yuva,” “Bunty Aur Babli,” “No One Killed Jessica,” “Hichki,” “Mardaani,” and “Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway” showcase her remarkable journey as an actress and her talent for storytelling.
Reflecting on her career, Rani stated, “When I entered the industry as a young girl, I never imagined that one day my films and the characters I portrayed would take me across the ocean and that people in a country like Australia would embrace me so warmly.”
She added, “Entertaining people worldwide through cinema is the greatest gift this profession has given me. Australia has always welcomed me and Indian cinema with open arms. It has become a place where cultures meet through storytelling, reminding us that emotions do not require a passport, and love, laughter, and hope speak a universal language.”
As an actor, Rani performs in front of the camera, but she believes the real story begins when her performance resonates with someone’s heart. She expressed, “It feels wonderful to know that over the past 30 years, my films, characters, and voice have reached so far from home and found a place in people’s lives.”
Rani considers herself fortunate to have played roles of women who laugh freely, love wholeheartedly, fight bravely, and never lose confidence in themselves. She remarked, “In many ways, each character has changed me a little. They have made me a better actor, but more importantly, they have made me a better person.”
The 17th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is being held from August 13 to 23, 2026.
