Ranbir Kapoor, Yash’s Ramayana To Face Competition From Akshay Kumar? Here’s How

Ranbir Kapoor’s much-awaited  is gearing up for a grand theatrical release this Diwali, but the mythological epic may have an unexpected competitor at the box office. Akshay Kumar’s 1994 action thriller Mohra, co-starring Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon, is set to return to cinemas in a 4K-remastered version on November 6, a day after Ramayana arrives on the big screen. While the two films belong to vastly different cinematic eras and genres, their release dates could set up an interesting box-office contest between a mega-budget mythological spectacle and a beloved Bollywood classic banking on nostalgia.

Mohra To Return To Theatres After 32 Years

Directed by Rajiv Rai and produced by Gulshan Rai under Trimurti Films, Mohra originally released on July 1, 1994, and emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year. Beyond its action sequences and suspenseful storyline, Mohra remains memorable for its music, particularly chartbusters such as Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast and Tip Tip Barsa Paani. The film’s return in a remastered 4K version will give audiences an opportunity to revisit the 1990s entertainer on the big screen The re-release has been confirmed by Trimurti Films, with Rimpy Films International handling its theatrical return. The distributor is also reportedly planning to bring back other films associated with the production house, including Gupt, Tridev, Yudh and Vidhaata.

Can Mohra Challenge Ramayana At The Box Office?

RamayanaWill a 32-year-old film be able to make a dent in the theatrical business of a major new release such as Ramayana?

The bigger question is whether a 32-year-old film can make a dent in the theatrical business of a major new release such as Ramayana. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the mythological epic stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, with Sunny Deol playing Hanuman and Ravie Dubey portraying the role of Lakshman. The film is scheduled to release worldwide on November 5, 2026.

While  is expected to attract audiences with its scale, visual spectacle and star power, Mohra has the advantage of nostalgia and a soundtrack that continues to enjoy popularity decades after its original release. However, the competition may not be evenly matched. As per reports, Mohra is expected to have a limited theatrical presence, with at least one single-screen cinema in Agra reportedly planning to dedicate all four daily shows to the re-release instead of screening Ramayana.
