Ramayan katha: Before killing Ravana, unique devotion of Lord Ram, he had offered his eye to Mother Durga.

Ravana Vadh Story: There are many inspiring incidents of devotion, sacrifice and dignity of Lord Shri Ram in Hindu scriptures. One such famous incident is from the time when Lord Rama worshiped Goddess Durga before conquering Lanka. It is believed that to defeat a powerful warrior like Ravana, Lord Rama performed Akal Bodhan i.e. special worship of Goddess Durga during Shardiya Navratri. It is said that when one Neelkamal fell short in the puja, Lord Rama had decided to offer even his eye. Let us know about the mythological story.

When Mother Durga awakened

According to mythology, Ravana was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and was very powerful. Winning a battle with him was not a normal thing. In such a situation, Vibhishan advised Shri Ram that worship of Mother Durga is necessary to defeat Ravana. At the time of Shardiya Navratri, Lord Ram awakened Akal Bodhan i.e. Untimely Goddess and started worshiping her. This puja was very important for the victory of Lanka.

108 Neelkamal and Devi’s test

As per the resolution of the puja, Lord Shri Ram had to offer 108 Neelkamals to the Goddess. The puja was in the final stages, when Mother Durga decided to test the unwavering devotion of Lord Rama. Due to the illusion of the Goddess, a Neelkamal disappeared from the place of worship. When Ram saw that the 108th Neelkamal was missing, he decided to fulfill his resolution instead of getting distracted. He was called Kamal Nayan (one with lotus like eyes). He thought that he would offer one of his eyes to the goddess in the form of a blue lotus.

When the Lord raised the arrow

As soon as Lord Rama raised his arrow to take out his eye, Mother Durga appeared. The Goddess was very happy to see this selfless devotion and unwavering dedication of Lord Rama. He held the hand of the Lord and blessed him for victory over Ravana.

Ravana’s mistake and Ram’s victory

On one hand, Lord Ram was selflessly practicing Shakti, while on the other hand, Ravana was also reciting Chandi to ensure his victory. But Ravana’s arrogance and a small mistake in chanting mantras during the puja became the reason for his defeat. The Goddess left Ravana and held the hand of Lord Shri Ram who was following the path of religion and ultimately Ravana was destroyed.
