Prem Sagar, son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, known for one of the iconic TV serials Ramayan, passed away on Sunday (August 31) at 10 am.

Prem was 84 when he took his last breath.

Sources, as quoted by NDTV, said, “He had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. On Sunday, doctors advised that he be taken home. He passed away this morning. The cremation will be held today at 3 pm at Pawan Hans cremation ground in Mumbai.”

A senior producer and acclaimed cinematographer, he carried forward the Sagar family’s rich legacy in Indian cinema and television.

An alumnus of the 1968 batch of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Prem Sagar received rigorous training that gave him a solid foundation in photography and cinematography.

Sagar completed his education at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in the 1968 batch. He produced iconic television shows like Vikram Aur Betaal, Ramayan, and Shri Krishna. Sagar also worked as a cinematographer in films such as Lalkar, Aankhen, and Charas.

As soon as the news went online, fans and TV celebs mourned his death. Actor Sunil Lahiri, who featured as Laxman in Ramayan, expressed his grief. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), he wrote, “Absolutely shocking news. We lost Prem Sagar ji, son of Ramanand Sagar ji of Ramayan. Om Shanti.”

Prem Sagar went on to play an essential role in shaping the visual identity of many projects under Sagar Arts, the production house founded by his father. Ramanand Sagar is best known for creating the serial Ramayan, which is loved to this date.
