According to mythology…
According to mythology, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had no shortage of glory, fame and empire. All that was missing was a successor. With this wish he went to sage Vashishtha. After this, under his guidance, the great sage Rishyashringa performed ‘Putrakameshti Yagya’. At the completion of this Yagya, Agni Dev himself appeared. He presented a vessel of divine ‘Kheer’ (prasad) to King Dasharatha.
After this, King Dashrath distributed the kheer among his three queens Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra. As a result of this divine offering, on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, was born in the form of Shri Ram from the womb of Queen Kaushalya.
Why was the incarnation of Lord Ram necessary?
Ravana’s atrocities had reached its peak in Tretayuga. Ravana had the boon that he would not die at the hands of any god or demon. To end Ravana and establish religion, Lord Vishnu incarnated in human form. The message that comes from the festival of Ram Navami is that whenever atrocities and injustice increase on earth, God comes in some form or the other to establish religion on earth.
