Mumbai: Actor Rajpal Yadav has voiced strong support for renowned singer Daler Mehndi, who recently faced public criticism during a cultural event in Uttarakhand.
Yadav highlighted the singer’s declining health and expressed concern over the public humiliation meted out by Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal.
In a video message, Rajpal Yadav condemned the minister’s conduct, stating, “The way a respected minister, in front of thousands of people, used such horrible words for a legendary singer whose voice has served the country and the world for decades, and even gave an example of beating, was shocking. Honourable Minister, this does not suit you.” He stressed that art cannot be bought and artists deserve respect beyond monetary considerations.
Responding to allegations of Daler Mehndi consuming alcohol, Yadav clarified, “And for your information, Mr Daler Mehndi does not drink alcohol. I have also worked with him in ‘Welcome to the Jungle’. His health is deteriorating, and everyone is trying to make him better as soon as possible.” The controversy erupted on October 18 at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in Tehri Garhwal, where Minister Uniyal publicly questioned Mehndi’s performance and sobriety.
Several prominent artists, including Mika Singh, Anupam Kher, and Kapil Sharma, have also come forward to support Daler Mehndi. They have pointed to his recent surgery and ongoing health issues, urging compassion instead of public shaming for the artist known for hits like ‘Tunak Tunak Tun’ and ‘Bolo Ta Ra Ra’.
