Rajnath Singh: ASEAN Central to India’s Act East Policy, Indo-Pacific Vision

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has reaffirmed India’s steadfast commitment to ASEAN centrality, highlighting its pivotal role in the nation’s Act East Policy and broader Indo-Pacific vision.

Speaking at the 13th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Cebu, Philippines, Singh emphasized the forum’s importance for regional stability and cooperation.

“India reiterates its unwavering commitment to ASEAN centrality, which is a cornerstone of our Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision. This forum is important for maintaining a resilient, secure and prosperous region,” Singh stated. He expressed hope that the ADMM meeting would bolster mutual trust, address emerging challenges, and advance defence collaboration among member states.

The ‘Act East Policy’ aims to foster economic cooperation, cultural ties, and strategic relationships across the Asia-Pacific region. It seeks to enhance connectivity for India’s North Eastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, with neighboring countries. This policy aligns with India’s domestic agenda, supporting initiatives like ‘Make in India,’ infrastructure development, and smart cities.

For the Indo-Pacific, India envisions ‘MAHASAGAR’ – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The ‘Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative’ (IPOI), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, further elaborates India’s maritime strategy.

On the sidelines of the ADMM-Plus, Singh also held a bilateral meeting with Philippine Secretary of National Defence Gilberto C Teodoro Jr. The discussions focused on reviewing existing defence cooperation and exploring avenues to strengthen their strategic partnership, particularly in maritime security and joint defence production.
