What is the story behind this?

According to mythological beliefs, about 800 years ago a demon named Babara lived in this area. He was so cruel that he used to kill grooms in marriages held in Brahmin houses. Due to this the entire area was immersed in fear and sorrow. Then, after listening to the prayers of the people, Mother Sheetala took the form of a little girl and destroyed the demon with her power. While dying, the demon admitted his mistake and asked for forgiveness from his mother. Mother Sheetala accepted his prayer and gave him a boon that food would be offered to him before her puja, so that his soul could rest in peace. Since then this tradition is being followed till today.
