Raigad: A rescue operation in the Savitri River near Poladpur in Maharashtra’s Raigad district narrowly escaped turning into a major tragedy on Monday, June 23, when a rescue boat capsized in powerful currents.

The dramatic moment was caught on camera, showing rescue personnel leaping into the water to save themselves after the boat overturned mid-operation.

No Injuries Reported In Boat Mishap

The team was engaged in a search for a youth who had reportedly drowned in the river. While navigating the strong river current, the boat lost balance and flipped, throwing all personnel into the water. Fortunately, all members of the rescue team were able to swim to safety and no injuries were reported.

In a separate incident that unfolded over the weekend, the bodies of two brothers who drowned while fishing were recovered after a 15-hour-long search. The victims, identified as Sagar Dhumal (35) and Akshay Dhumal alias Chhotya (30), were residents of Gorsai village and employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The tragic incident occurred on the evening of Friday, June 20, when the brothers had gone fishing at a dam linked to the Kamvari River.

According to police, Akshay accidentally slipped and fell into the water. In a desperate attempt to save him, Sagar jumped in, but both were overcome by the current and drowned. Sagar had been married just a year ago, adding to the heartbreak of the tragedy.

The Bhiwandi fire brigade launched a search operation at around 5:10 PM on June 20 after being alerted by local residents. “We rushed to the spot with two fire engines immediately after receiving the call,” a fire officer from Bhiwandi fire station said. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) later joined the efforts and the bodies were finally located a kilometre downstream from the site on the morning of June 21.
