In fact, the Congress has received a big defeat in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). The ITAT has rejected the appeal of the Congress and upheld the tax demand of Rs 199.15 crore. The party claimed exemption under Section 13A of the Income Tax Act for the Assessment Year 2018-19. This exemption is given to political parties despite filing returns after the statutory deadline and accepting cash donations in violation of legal boundaries. The Congress filed its income tax return on February 2, 2019, after more than one month of the extended deadline of December 31, 2018 under Section 139 (1) for that financial year. Under Section 13A, after claiming a rebate of Rs 199.15 crore, zero income was declared in the return.

How much Congress has wealth

According to the data submitted to the Election Commission, till March 31, 2024, the Congress party had a net worth of Rs 857.15 crore. The Congress spent Rs 619.67 crore in 2023-24, which is more than Rs 192.56 crore in the previous year. In its audit report, the Congress reported a total contribution of Rs 1,225.11 crore, of which Rs 1,129.67 crore was received from grants, donations and other sources. It also included 828.36 crore rupees received through electronic bonds, which was banned by the Supreme Court.

Talking about the expenditure, the Congress spent Rs 207.94 crore on electronic media and Rs 43.73 crore on print media. It also spent Rs 62.65 crore on aircraft and helicopters and provided Rs 238.55 crore to its candidates. In addition, the Congress allocated Rs 28.03 crore for campaigning and Rs 79.78 crore for social media expenses. The party also spent Rs 49.63 crore on the Bharat Jito Yatra 2 under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, while in 2022-23, Rs 71.84 crore was spent on the original Bharat Joko Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
