R Madhavan Was Left ‘Heartbroken’ After Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’s Box Office Failure, Says ‘Visited Temples…’

R Madhavan, who gave us the iconic character Maddy in his evergreen film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, opened up about how the film’s failure at the box office at that time left him ‘heartbroken’.

Though the film was not a hit, it made a place in the hearts of his fans and was re-released earlier this year.

R Madhavan in conversation with Desk during his presence at IFFI 2024 in Goa, revealed that he visited several temples at the time of Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’s release. Even after praying hard for the film’s success, it did not work in his favour. The actor also recalled that he was heartbroken at the time.

“When it first released, it didn’t do well; it was a flop. So I remember being heartbroken. I had gone to all the temples and made sure I had left no stone unturned to make the film the way it was supposed to, but it was heartbreaking,” he said.

The romantic drama Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, which was a remake of his own Tamil film Minnale, was released in 2001. Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, the film also starred Saif Ali Khan and Dia Mirza. The songs including Sach Keh Raha Hai, Dil Ko Tumse, and Zara Zara to catchy dialogues are still loved by the audience to date.

Expressing his feelings on the film’s re-release after 23 years which earned more than it did during its original run in the theatres, stated “Little did I realize that fortune and fate had a big story for me. It (re)released after 25 years and made more money than it did originally. It’s wonderful to be recognised for doing a film 25 years later.”
