RAshwin has shared his take on Rohit Sharma’s IPL future and namedropped MS Dhoni. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin cited Dhoni’s example and said that he continues to play IPL despite retiring from international cricket in 2020. Dhoni, who captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to five IPL title wins, is now only active in IPL. He missed the complete IPL 2026 season due to an injury.
Rohit is now only active in ODI cricket and IPL. He retired from T20Is in 2024 and quit Test cricket a year later.
“We don’t know if he’s (Rohit) going to play only one more year or longer. The same has been said about Dhoni, and he has ended up playing for many years and will likely return as a player again next season. In the future, I won’t rule out Naman Dhir also as a captaincy option in the future, looking at his clarity and unflappability,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Rohit joined Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2011 mega-auction and has been playing for them since then. He captained MI to five IPL title wins before being sacked. Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain before IPL 2024.
Hardik Pandya to leave MI?

is likely to be released or traded to another franchise before IPL 2027. Pandya, who returned to MI before IPL 2024, struggled on the captaincy front.
Pandya-led MI finished last in the IPL 2024 points table. They cleared the league stage next year and lost to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier. They finished ninth in the IPL 2026 points table.
Pandya enjoyed huge success at Gujarat Titans (GT) as captain. He captained GT to a title win in their debut IPL season in 2022. In 2023, they lost to Chennai Super Kings in a last-over thriller in the final. GT have only played one IPL final since then.
