Punjab Police has arrested Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station in Hoshiarpur district, after an investigation allegedly established his involvement in extorting and accepting illegal gratification from a US-based family in connection with a murder case.
DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla told this correspondent here today that Inspector Nagra was immediately relieved from his post as SHO Tanda and transferred to Police Lines, Hoshiarpur, after serious allegations surfaced in media reports regarding a US indictment linking him to extortion related to the murder case. He said the murder investigation was subsequently entrusted to an IPS officer posted outside Hoshiarpur district to ensure a fair and impartial probe.
The DIG said the investigation, based on technical analysis, financial trails, witness statements and other corroborative evidence, revealed that the inspector had extorted and accepted ₹16 lakh as illegal gratification from the US-based family.
He said that after sufficient evidence was collected, Inspector Nagra was nominated as an accused in FIR No. 20 dated January 16, 2026, registered at Tanda Police Station under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Singla further said the inspector was arrested on July 17 and would be produced before the competent court, where police would seek his remand to further unravel the alleged conspiracy. He added that the officer has been placed under suspension and departmental proceedings have also been initiated against him.
The DIG said the investigation is continuing and further evidence is being collected, adding that the action reflects the Punjab Government’s commitment to ensuring accountability, transparency and the rule of law, irrespective of the position held by any public servant.
