A tragic incident has come to light from Pune’s Ambegaon area, where a 31-year-old woman died by suicide along with her six-year-old son, allegedly due to ongoing harassment by her husband and in-laws.
The incident took place around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at a building in Dalvi Nagar, Ambegaon, under the jurisdiction of Ambegaon police.
The deceased have been identified as Mayuri Shashikant Deshmukh (31) and her son Vishnu Shashikant Deshmukh (6). Both died on the spot after jumping from the building’s terrace.
According to police, Mayuri was originally from Khamgaon in Buldhana district and was living in a rented flat in Dalvi Nagar. She worked as a kindergarten teacher in a private school, while her husband is employed as a clerk in a bank.
Two days prior to the incident, Mayuri had travelled to her in-laws’ home in Buldhana, where she had an argument with her husband’s family. She returned to Pune alone with her son and was reportedly under severe stress since then.
On the day of the incident, Mayuri took her child to the terrace of the building and jumped, ending both their lives.
Upon receiving a distress call, Ambegaon police rushed to the spot and recovered a suicide note written in lipstick from the terrace. In the note, Mayuri blamed harassment by her sister-in-law and other in-laws for her extreme step.
Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zine of Ambegaon Police Station told The Free Press Journal that Mayuri’s husband has been taken into custody for questioning. “At this stage, harassment appears to be the reason for suicide. The matter is under further investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.
