Lucknow: In the digital era, Internet has become not just a convenience but a major medium for development and employment. Keeping this in mind, the Uttar Pradesh government is taking a big initiative towards increasing digital connectivity in rural areas. Under the ‘Project Ganga’ scheme being launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a target has been set to provide high-speed internet to millions of homes in the coming years.
An MOU has been signed between the State Transformation Commission and OneOTT Entertainment Limited, a subsidiary of Hinduja Group, for this project. The government believes that this initiative will not only expand digital services but will also create employment opportunities on a large scale.
High-speed internet will reach 20 lakh homes
Under ‘Project Ganga’, there is a plan to provide high-speed broadband internet to about 20 lakh homes in the state in the next 2 to 3 years. It is estimated that about one crore people will get direct benefits from this.

Youth will get technology based employment
The government believes that reaching high-speed internet in villages will boost sectors like online business, digital services, e-commerce, education and health. This will provide new avenues of earning to rural youth through digital platforms.
The government is also providing financial assistance to connect the youth with digital entrepreneurship. Under the scheme launched in January 2024, loans up to Rs 5 lakh are being given to the youth without interest and without guarantee. Till now more than one lakh people have taken advantage of it.
Digital infrastructure will change the direction of development
Manoj Kumar Singh, CEO of the State Transformation Commission, said that in today’s time the importance of digital infrastructure has in many cases become more than that of physical expressways.
He said that this project will help in reducing the digital divide and will provide broadband connectivity, OTT services and high-speed internet access to the villages. This will provide new income opportunities to the youth through YouTube, digital content, online business and other platforms.
Border districts will get special benefits
This initiative will strengthen digital connectivity especially in border districts like Shravasti, Bahraich and Balrampur. The people there will get direct benefits of services like online education, telemedicine, e-commerce and digital skilling.
Target of creating one lakh jobs
Winsley Fernandes said that the objective of ‘Project Ganga’ is not only to provide internet but also to empower youth and women. Through this scheme, a target has been set to create about one lakh direct and indirect employment in the state.
Satyaprakash Singh said that through this project, digital services will be provided to remote and till now internet deprived areas. This will give a new impetus to the rural economy and open new avenues of technology-based employment.
Overall, ‘Project Ganga’ is being considered as a big initiative towards digital empowerment and employment generation in Uttar Pradesh, which can change the face of villages in the coming years.
