Prithviraj Sukumaran on directing Mohanlal’s L3 Azrael: ‘I’m not the one to make that decision’

Before its big release on March 27, 2025, L2 Empuraan was the highly anticipated Malayalam film as it marked the sequel to the blockbuster hit Lucifer.

But the Mohanlal-starrer film ran into controversies, and now the question is whether the third part in the Lucifer trilogy would be made. Lucifer director Prithviraj Sukumaran recently addressed this oft-repeated question, saying that it is not a decision he alone can make.

Prithviraj on will Mohanlal’s L3 Azrael be made?

L3 Azrael is the third part in the Lucifer trilogy, starring superstar Mohanlal as Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam. During a recent interview with Manorama News, Prithviraj was asked if the third installment of the Lucifer franchise would be made.

“There should be, that is my desire,” remarked the actor-director. But the Bro Daddy director said the next immediate directorial that he would like to work on is another film, and not L3.

“I really would like to complete a story that we have started saying. But I am not the one to make that decision,” added Prithviraj, who also plays the key role of Zayed Masood who is the loyal aide to Khureshi.

Empuraan is backed by Antony Perumbavoor, a long-time associate of Mohanlal. The film also features Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier along with an enviable star cast.

What is Empuraan controversy about

Soon after Empuraan released in theatres in March 2025, a section of the audience took objection to certain violent scenes, claiming that it sought to show the right-wing in the bad light. Even RSS mouthpiece Organizer wrote scathing articles, slamming the film and its makers. Mohanlal was forced to issue an apology on social media over the ‘distress’ the film may have caused. Prithviraj shared Mohanlal’s post but did not publicly address the row till now.

Before the release of his second Malayalam film this year, after Empuraan, Vilaayath Budha, Prithviraj finally broke his silence, saying that he does not have to make a big-budget film just to make a political statement. Vilaayath Budha releases in theatres on November 21, 2025.

Prithviraj’s other big project, which has taken the film industry by storm, is the Telugu film Varanasi, helmed by SS Rajamouli.
