Prithvinath Mandir Gonda: An incident came to light from Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, which immersed the entire area into mourning. 11 devotees, who rode in a Bolero car to visit the Prithvinath temple, drowned in the canal before reaching the temple. The accident occurred in the Itia Wholesale police station area, where the car went uncontrolled and fell into the canal. 11 people died in the accident, while some people were seriously injured. This temple, where devotees were going to visit, is not just a religious place, but a historical sign, which is considered associated with the Mahabharata period.
Why is Prithvinath Temple special?
The Prithvinath Temple located in Khargupur area of Gonda district is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shivalinga established here is considered to be the highest Shivling in Asia, which is about 54 feet height. This Shivling is not only known for its grandeur, but 64 feet below it is also recorded in mythology. It is divided into seven volumes and an interesting story is attached to its installation.

What is its relationship with Pandavas?
There is religious belief that Mahabali Bhima established this Shivling during the unknown. It is described in the forest of Mahabharata that the Pandavas reached the Kaushal Rajya (today’s Gonda region) with their mother Kunti. The terror of a demon Bakasur was spread here, which was defeated by Bhima. But since Bakasur was a Brahmin demon, killing him caused the sin of Brahma Samvat on Bhima. On the instructions of Shri Krishna to get rid of sin, he did penance to Lord Shiva and established a huge Shivling here.
How did you get the name ‘Prithvinath’?
Over time, this Shivling got buried in the ground. But in the 19th century, when Prithvi Singh, a retired soldier of Gonda King of Gonda King, started digging at this place, blood -like fluid started coming out of the ground. The nervous laborers stopped the work, but the same night, Lord Shiva appeared in the dream by Lord Shiva and described the secret of the Shivling buried in the ground. The next morning, a huge Shivling was found in the excavation and then the temple was built. Since then this temple became famous as “Prithvinath Temple”.
What does history and archeology say?
It is believed that this Shivling is 5000 to 6500 years old and is made of black criterion stone. In the investigation of the Department of Archeology, this Shivling has also been described as the Mahabharata period. Not only this, this temple is also mentioned in the Mughal documents, where a commander renovated it.
Why do devotees believe this place special?
Prithvinath Temple is not just a religious place, but a symbol of faith and blessings. Here in the month of Sawan, lakhs of devotees come to perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the prayer made with true heart is definitely fruitful. According to the priest of the temple, every year on the occasion of Shivaratri, a huge fair is also held here, which has become a part of the culture and tradition of the entire region.
