Remembering Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that today Vande Mataram is running in the veins of every Indian as a song of patriotism. He said, ‘The country should become self-reliant. Vande Mataram is a big opportunity to reiterate this resolve to create a developed India in 2047. This journey of Vande Mataram was started by Bankim Chandra ji in 1875. We should not forget that the song was written at a time when the British Sultanate was in panic after the war of independence in 1857. At that time, a conspiracy was going on to take the British national song – ‘God Save the Queen’ to every home. At such a time, this song was written to spread Indianness and patriotism to the people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during the Vande Mataram discussion that it is said in our country since the Vedic period that Mata Bhoomi Putro Aham Prithivya means this land (Earth) is my mother and I am the son of the Earth. PM further connecting this verse with the tradition of Praghu Shri Ram, said, ‘This is the thought which Lord Shri Ram had also said while leaving the glory of Lanka that Janani Janmabhoomischa Swargadapi Gariyasi. Vande Mataram is the modern incarnation of this great cultural tradition.

He further said that when Bankim da composed Vande Mataram, it became the voice of the freedom movement. East to west, north to south. Vande Mataram became the voice of every Indian.

Veer Savarkar sang the song Vande Mataram at India House in London. This song used to echo there again and again. Newspapers were published in the name of Vande Mataram. Bhikaji Cama published a newspaper in Paris and named it Vande Mataram. Vande Mataram also showed India the path to self-reliance. This was the national anthem of Indians being self-reliant.
